Intense Pulse Light (IPL): Skin Rejuvenation or Photorejuvenation
Skin imperfections can have a big impact on a person’s confidence and
self-image. It can be a hereditary condition, the effects of ageing or
too much time in the sun – whatever the cause of the problem, more and
more people are discovering that there is a simple, quick and
non-invasive solution.
IPL uses the latest light technology to improve the colour and
texture of the skin. It is a fast, safe and very effective way to
improve the look and feel of your skin.
Intense
Pulsed Light systems (IPL) are different from lasers in that they can deliver
hundreds of wavelengths (or colours) in each burst of light. Certain
filters are used that target these flashes of light so that they can
work in as precise a way as lasers. The broad spectrum of
light reaches deep down to the collagen level of the skin
to produce remarkable results. The therapeutic light energy is
transformed to heat energy. The target tissue is then fragmented
and absorbed without damage to the surrounding skin. The skin
surface is left smooth and rejuvenated.
Which conditions can be treated?
- Acne and Rosacea (helps calm the redness)
- Sun spots (pigmentation caused by the sun)
- Photo-ageing/hyper-pigmentation
- Birthmarks
- Port wine stains
- Telangiectasias or broken veins
It is also used to rejuvenate the skin
by activating the fibroblasts to produce more
collagen and elastin leaving the skin firmer
and smoother: Photorejuvenation (IPL)
Does the treatment hurt?
Our patients report no pain, merely a mild tingling sensation within the skin.
How is Photorejuvenation performed?
A cold gel is applied to the area to be treated. The smooth
glass surface of the IPL hand piece is gently placed on your
skin and pulses of light are applied. A slight sting, like the
snapping of a small rubber band will be felt. Treatment is
administered in a series of procedures that provides excellent
long-term results and high client satisfaction.
How many treatments will I need?
For the best results, we usually recommend six treatments with a gap of at least two weeks between treatments.
Why are multiple treatments necessary?
Depending on the number of conditions you are treating and
the severity of the individual problem, a series of five or six
treatments may be recommended. Each treatment takes about 45
minutes.
How soon will I see results?
You should see some improvement after the first treatment. Final results will be visible at the end of the course.
Are there any side effects?
There might be some slight reddening of your skin in treated area
immediately after the procedure, but this should disappear rapidly.
Is there any downtime?
No, but you should avoid sun exposure for 24-48 hours and moisturize the treated area regularly.
Imperfections from sun damage and photo aging
The overall appearance of aging skin is primarily related
to the quantitative effects of sun exposure with resultant
UV damage to the collagen and elastic fibres of the skin.
This results in skin imperfections such as: skin laxity,
dull complexion, enlarged pores, mottled pigmentation,
excessive freckling and red and brown sun spots. IPL
minimises or eliminates red and brown spots, evens out skin
colour and texture and minimises red or flushed appearing
skin.
Broken veins and capillaries
Over time, ageing, trauma, sun exposure and certain
lifestyle factors cause a number of veins and capillaries to
break. These appear as red streaks or blotches on the face.
IPL therapy can eliminate damaged veins and capillaries by
removing virtually all traces of these unsightly blemishes.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a skin condition that leaves people's face red with
chronic flushing. This is caused by the dilation of
capillaries and blood vessels. Rosacea can also cause white
pimples and blisters on the nose and cheeks. This condition
can affect both men and women. IPL can successfully treat
dilated blood vessels and redness without injuring the
surrounding healthy skin, while greatly reducing the
episodes of flushing with long-term effectiveness.
